Mercury to drop 3 degrees in Bengal in next 2 days, says MeT

The Meteorological Department on Thursday predicted a gradual dip in minimum temperatures across West Bengal by 2-3°C over the next two days, signaling colder conditions ahead for the region. The picturesque hill town of Darjeeling recorded the state's lowest temperature at 3.8°C on Thursday morning, making it the coldest spot in Bengal.

The weather office further stated that dense fog is expected to prevail in isolated areas of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, including Darjeeling and Kalimpong, until December 13. Travelers heading to these areas should brace for reduced visibility during early mornings and evenings.

Kolkata, the state’s capital, experienced a significant drop in minimum temperature on Thursday, registering 13.8°C, which is two notches below the seasonal average. This marks a notable decline from 16.2°C recorded just a day earlier.

In the plains, Purulia emerged as the coldest district, recording a minimum temperature of 8.2°C, followed by Sriniketan at 9.2°C. Kalimpong, another prominent hill destination in north Bengal, recorded a low of 9.3°C, according to official data.

The Met department assured that the state would experience dry weather conditions over the next five days, despite the temperature dip. This is likely to provide some respite to residents and travelers from unexpected rainfall or storms during this chilly phase.

The gradual temperature drop aligns with seasonal weather patterns, but the sharp contrasts between plains and hills underscore the geographical diversity of West Bengal. As winter tightens its grip, tourist hotspots in north Bengal like Darjeeling and Kalimpong are expected to witness an influx of visitors eager to enjoy the brisk mountain air.
